Learning from (Non)Users

In environments increasingly shaped by automated decision-making, voices of people who actively resist or maintain a nuanced relationship with data-collecting technologies become ever more critical. While such "non-users" are commonly seen by technologists as adversarial or warranting conversion, an empathetic consideration can reveal values-based concerns and potential social implications.

In this workshop, we'll examine how non-users' stories can positively impact the ways in which we consume and develop digital resources. Together we'll analyze narratives for "signaling" opportunities — how might a non-user signal an assertion of their rights, and how might designers recognize and respond to such a signal? (And if a signal is ignored, how might we put disruption in the hands of the non-user?) Light prototyping will ensue, followed by a gallery discussion.
